How much Epsom salt do you use to rebuild a battery?

 Repair of the Battery Bittersalz

A simple step-by-step guide to repackaging dead batteries with Epsom salt at home.

Treating Battery with Epsom salt is a cost-effective way to extend and revitalize the natural life of your lead battery. Like me, I'm pretty stingy when it comes to paying a high price for new items when I can still squeeze the juice out of my old stuff.

There are several other additives that you can use in the production of your electrolyte solution. However, I have to concentrate on Epsom salt today, in my exchange. Most importantly, you need to ensure your safety before you do the entire process at home. Battery solutions are made from acidic liquids, so you need to wear your gloves and glasses to

Protection.

I have here some of the things you need to know about reprocessing the bitter salt battery. Just keep reading until the last part of my article.

Advantages of reprocessing lead-acid battery with Epsom salt

You can enjoy some benefits by overhauling your old batteries. Here are some of the key benefits you can have.

Enormous cost savings

If you repackage your car's batteries, you can avoid spending a lot of money on a new cell. The standard 12V car battery costs about $ 50 to $ 120, while expensive brands range from 90 TB to 200 TB.. By reconditioning, you can save about 25-50% of retail costs.

Earn a few dollars

How many of your neighbors have old car batteries that are not damaged, but still functional? Say you have 10. A new battery would cost about $ 100, but if you repack your batteries and charge about 20 5 to 50.. They win about 2,200 to 5,500 for the 10 of them. That's a lot of money.

By learning Epsom Salt battery pack concepts, you can start your own business and earn a decent profit.

Reduce Waste

There are millions of car owners in the United States. If all your old car cells would replace, then it's about 1 million lead-acid battery waste for disposal. To minimize this waste, it is good practice to repackage your 12V car cells.

Tips and warnings

I always prioritize safety among all things, especially when it comes to chemicals. Please note that battery solutions are acidic and contain traces of metallic lead. These chemicals are harmful to our health and the environment.

Car battery solutions consist mainly of sulfuric acid, which is very corrosive and creates vapors that you do not need to inhale. For protection, wear the appropriate safety clothing, i.e. glasses, gloves and an apron.

When performing the repacking process, make sure you are in a well-ventilated area with an available water supply. Also, avoid pouring the old electrolyte solution directly as it could splash anywhere and in your clothes.

How to repack an old battery with Epsom Salt

We are now in the right repackaging, and you need to prepare the necessary materials for this process. Here are the materials and tools you need to manufacture in advance.

Materials and tools

Epsom

Bicarbonate

Distilled Water

An old or new toothbrush

Steel wool or Sandpaper (Optional)

Voltmeter

Bucket

Battery Charge Tester

Charger for battery reprocessing

- Glasses

Glove

Apron

Flat Head Screwdriver

Funnel

Procedure

STEP 1 Wear your protective clothing-gloves, apron, and goggles.

STEP 2remove your car battery and place it on your work table.

STEP 3 Remove the corrosion in the battery terminals. Prepare a baking powder (2 parts) and a solution of distilled water (1 part). The resulting solution is sticky and pasty.

STEP 4 keep your toothbrush and dip it into the baking powder solution. Then brush the battery terminals to eliminate corrosion.

Step 5 IF corrosion is difficult to remove, use steel wool or sandpaper.

STEP 6after removing the caps from the battery with a flat head screw, place them in a container to prevent them from getting lost.

STEP 7 Gently tilt the battery and pour the old electrolyte solution into your bucket.

STEP 8depending on the volume of the battery solution, you can pour 1 lb of baking powder into the bucket to neutralize the acid.

Step 9 YOU can prepare another baking powder (1 part) and a solution of distilled water (1 part). Use your funnel and pour some volume into each cell. Turn and close all the battery caps and shake the battery for 30 seconds to 1 minute. In this way, the lead sulfate solids are dissolved in the plates. You can do this twice. Remove the battery caps and pour the solution into the same bucket.

Step 10PREPARATION of the bitter salt battery solution

1 / 2quart distilled water to 66 degrees Celsius heat. We do this to ensure that all salts are dissolved later when mixing.

dissolve 7 to 8 ounces of epsom salt in hot distilled water and stir until completely dissolved.

You can repeat the process if not all cells of the battery are filled with the new electrolyte solution.

STEP 11use your funnel and pour the prepared bitter salt solution into each cell of your car battery.

STEP 12turn and attach the battery caps in the car battery.

STEP 13 Connect your charger to the 12V car battery and turn it into the 12V/2amp slow charging mode. Let it charge for 12 to 24 hours.

STEP 14after charging, measure the battery voltage with a voltmeter. A battery that is in full capacity and in good condition will have a reading from 12.4 V to 12.43 V.

Step 15IF the battery has not reached this voltage value, you must unload the battery and charge it properly.

STEP 16 Place the battery in a charging test. You can buy a battery charge tester in any hardware store. It comes at an affordable price.

The myth of the bitter salt battery

I still hear rumors about the myth of the bitter salt battery, and whether it works for repacking. Here I have some ideas on why it works by reducing the life of your car battery back.

Epsom salt has the chemical name magnesium sulfate. This salt has many uses and its food quality brand is used for cooking. During the repackaging process, one thing that needs to be corrected is the sulfation in the plates.

Sulfation occurs when solid lead sulfate accumulates around the battery plates. Epsom salt, or magnesium sulfate solution is able to soften these solid salts.

Mythbusters:

Magnesium sulfate and lead sulfate undergo a single replacement reaction. Magnesium metal is more reactive than lead, so it is able to replace it in plates. Note; magnesium sulfate is very soluble in water. With this, the metal pipe is gradually restored and removed around the plates.

Overall, the bitter salt solution helps in the desulfation process and serves as a good conductor for the current.

Frequently asked questions

I have also included some FAQs on this topic for further information.

What is a suitable voltage for charging car batteries?

You can charge your car batteries with voltages higher than 12V, for example, 15V. however, you need to have close monitoring to avoid congestion, and it should not reach 100% full capacity.

In the meantime, if you plan to leave it for the load, the corresponding float voltage is from 13.6 V to 13.8 V.

How long do you think after starting the engine until the battery is charged?

A general answer for this is about 8 to 99 seconds after starting the engine.

When do you add water to your battery? After or before the store?

Usually, you need to add water before you charge the battery. During the charging process, bubbles arise, which help to mix water and acid from the battery.

What is the voltage you think your battery is running out of?

If the battery voltage is less than 10 V, consider it empty or fully discharged.
